COLOR MIXING 101

Lesson Plan for session 1 of 3

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The first lesson will focus on our supplies, set up and how to get started with a dual primary mindset. This lesson will set up the practices for the next 2 sessions for getting the practice necessary to get started with mixing the color you want from just a few colors on your palette and matching it every time(with practice). 

What will we be doing during this session?

  1. Warm up drawing activity (20min.)

  2. Set up our supplies and watch demo

  3. Set up the palette and follow instructions from demo

  4. Use your mixes on your warm up drawing

  5. Review what we learned and Q&A

OBJECTIVES

  1. Learn and create a basic drawing sample to be used in the paint lesson later

  2. Learn how to set up a dual primary palette with your own supplies

  3. Learn how to mix and match a color using your dual primary palette

  4. Preview lesson 2: Dual Primary Palette set up and paint your color matched subject from LAC resources and demo.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  1. Your paint (watercolor, acrylic or oils). Studio supplies are available for use as well.

  2. Small - medium synthetic soft brushes. Studio brushes are available for use as well.

  3. 3 surfaces that best match your medium

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

The second lesson will review our supplies, set up and how to use our color wheel to mix with a dual primary mindset. This lesson will focus on tints and shades or each hue you will mix using both warm and cool. Students will create a resource for painting flesh colors. (Even if you don't paint people, you will learn ALOT and you will use it!)

What will we be doing during this session?

  1. Warm up drawing activity (5min.)

  2. Set up our supplies and watch a demo (20-30 min.)

  3. Set up the palette and follow instructions from the demo (20-30 min.)

  4. Use your mixes on your warm up drawing (20min.) Review and Q&A

OBJECTIVES

  1. Learn a simple mindfulness drawing skill to relax.

  2. Review and set up your dual primary palette with full range of colors.

  3. Learn how to mix warm and cool flesh colors.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  1. Your paint (watercolor, acrylic or oils) and Small - medium synthetic soft brushes.

  2. Your charts from last lesson and 3 surfaces that best match your medium.

Resources for review or pre-class preview:

  1. Learn about simplifying your color choices using dual primaries and why(10min.)

  2. We will NOT be creating the samples that are created in the video during class.

  3. Write down any questions and observations you may have during the video and we can discuss them during class.
